Outdoor Flicks and World Cup Kicks Come to Lower Manhattan
Tonight (Wednesday, July 8), the Downtown Alliance, in partnership with the Perelman Performing Arts Center and the Battery Conservancy, will host a free, outdoor screening of the classic MGM musical “On the Town” on the lawn of the Battery. The film, which stars Frank Sinatra, Gene Kelly, and Jules Munshin, and introduced several popular standards (such as “New York, New York”) follows the misadventures of three American sailors on a 24-hour shore leave in New York City in 1944. The interactive program will include giveaways and surprise performances. Gates will open at 6pm, and the movie begins at 7:30pm.
This screening is part of Big Screen at the Battery, a free summer series of outdoor movies, World Cup watch parties, and special events, presented by the Battery Conservancy and the Battery Park City Authority. Additional upcoming films include “By George” (July 9), “West Side Story” (July 10), “The Muppets Take Manhattan” (July 13), Ghostbusters 2 (July 14), “Little Fugitive” (July 17), and “Once in a Lifetime” (July 18). Resuming Thursday (and continuing through July 19), the Battery is also hosting daily (except July 13 and 17) watch parties for the FIFA World Cup. The Soccer Streets Watch Party has just been announced for Gotham Park on Friday July 10 from 2pm to 6pm. Live music by Fogo Azul will kick things off at 2pm at this DOT-sponsored event. Details here.

Governors Island will host The People’s Final, a free watch party for the World Cup Final on Sunday, July 19, from 1pm to 6pm. In addition to the large-scale screening of the final match, Governors Island will also provide soccer clinics and open play opportunities, live DJs, and family-centered activities. Back to the movies: Seaport Cinema will offer free, open-air films every Tuesday at sunset, on the north side of Pier 17. Titles include “National Treasure” (July 21), “She’s the Man” (July 28), “Legally Blond” (August 4), “13 Going on 30” (August 11), “Crazy Rich Asians” (August 18), “Dirty Dancing” (August 25), and “King Richard” (September 1).
