Seats Going Fast for Community Meal at Gotham Park

Lower Manhattan’s newest park, beneath the exit ramps of the Brooklyn Bridge, will host the Longest Table Community Potluck on Saturday, October 18, from noon to 3:30pm. Supported by Trinity Church, Goldman Sachs, and the Seaport Entertainment Group (among others), the potluck event at Gotham Park will bring together Lower Manhattan community members for a shared repast. Organizers will supply tables and chairs; guests are asked to contribute part of the meal.

The Longest Table is a grassroots initiative by the nonprofit NYCNext organization, which creates community-building events in public spaces by setting up a block-long table and inviting people in the surrounding community to eat together.

“Gotham Park will be transformed by one continuous table stretching along the north side of the Brooklyn Bridge’s Manhattan landing,” says Rosa Chang, the Lower Manhattan community leader who co-founded Gotham Park and serves as its president.

Anyone planning to attend is asked to bring a dish, a drink, or even a centerpiece to share. The event is free, but planners must finalize soon how many chairs to arrange for, so guests are asked to register in advance here. Organizers are looking for volunteers to serve as table captains, greeters, setup and breakdown crews, photographers/videographers, and general helpers.

The meal will be followed by a live performance from Lower Manhattan-based opera company, Teatro Grattacielo (the name means means “skyscraper theater’ in Italian), which specializes in rarely heard verismo (“realistic”) operas. The music will be followed by a guided conversation on community, culture, and creativity.
