New Weekly Farmers Market Coming to Lower Manhattan on Sundays
A new weekly farmers market is coming to Lower Manhattan. Hosted by the Battery Park City Authority (BPCA) and launching on Mother’s Day, May 11, the Down to Earth vendors will set up at the Irish Hunger Memorial plaza near the Brookfield ferry terminal, on Sundays, 9am to 2pm through November 23.
Down to Earth Markets (which has been operating successful markets in Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, and Westchester since 1991) says they will bring “just-picked fruits and vegetables, pasture-raised meats and eggs, pickles, small batch sauces, artisan baked goods and more, making it possible to buy the best of our region directly from the grower or maker. Shopping at a farmers market offers enormous benefits: the food is fresh and high quality, the environmental impact is minimal, and the greatest possible percentage of every food dollar goes back to the farm or kitchen.”
“The farmers market will not only support local farmers,” said BPCA president Raju Mann. “We hope it will help foster a sense of community and become a Sunday tradition for Lower Manhattan.” During market hours, the one-block stretch of River Terrace between Murray Street and North End Avenue will be closed to vehicular traffic and parking.
