In 1882, Henri Fabre was born into a family of shipowners in the city of Marseille. After studying at the Jesuit College of Marseilles he undertook scientific studies that lead him to invent the first successful seaplane, the Fabre Hydravion. On March 28, 1910, he completed four consecutive flights, the longest about 600 meters in his Hydravion. The flying machine survives to this day and is displayed in the Musйe de l’Air in Paris As late as 1971, the aged Fabre could still be seen sailing his own boat single-handedly in Marseille harbor. He died at the age of 101.
