1944 Nicholas Alkemade falls 5,500 meters (18,000 feet) without a parachute and lives. That number was surpassed by Vesna Vulović in 1972 when she fell 10,000 meters (33,000 feet) and survived. After a long recovery she was able to walk again. The longest distance fallen by a man with a parachute was in 2012, when Red Bull athlete Felix Baumgartner jumped from 24 miles above earth.
