Renwen Lecture: Mei Lanfang, China’s Stage Idol-On the 90th anniversary of his Broadway performance

China Institute
At the invitation of China Institute in America, the Peking Opera grand master Mei Lanfang embarked on a U.S. performing tour in February, 1930. His elegant and exquisite performance on Broadway enthralled theater-goers and caused a sensation in New York at a time when the country was hit by a depression. Brooks Atkinson, theater critic of the New York Times, heaped praises on Mei Lanfang by gushing that “the chief impression is one of grace and beauty, stateliness and sobriety, of unalloyed imagination.” To mark the 90th anniversary of Mei’s historical visit to the US and his debut on Broadway, the Renwen Society presents a special lecture by Dr. Du Wenwei of Vassar College on the master’s life and art. Dr. Ho Yong, co-chair of the Renwen Society, will join him in recalling China Institute’s efforts in bringing over Mei Lanfang to the U.S. 40 Rector Street. Free

Shadow Theater Workshops

China Institute
Chinese shadow performance has a history going back 2000 years. The traditional shadow theater uses beautifully carved and colored animal-skin figures, manipulated behind cloth screens to portray vivid episodes from history, religion, literature and folktale. In these workshops, Chinese Theatre Works artists will introduce participants to this fascinating art form (the root of all motion picture media) and lead them in designing and building their own shadow figures! This workshop is available to all ages and skill levels from ages 6 and up. Three unique workshops will be offered over the course of “The Art of Chinese New Year” in January and February. These workshops are available to all ages and skill levels from ages 6 and up. 40 Rector Street. $10

Many ships pass Lower Manhattan on their way to and from the Midtown Passenger Ship Terminal.  Others may be seen on their way to or from piers in Brooklyn and Bayonne.  Stated times, when appropriate, are for passing the Colgate clock in Jersey City, New Jersey, and are based on sighting histories, published schedules and intuition. They are also subject to passenger and propulsion problems, tides, fog, winds, freak waves, hurricanes and the whims of upper management.
