44 Lower Manhattan Eateries Participating in Restaurant Week
It is indicative both of Lower Manhattan’s emergence as a culinary destination and the local reemergence from the Covid pandemic that more Downtown restaurants than ever before are participating in New York’s Restaurant Week, which begins next Tuesday (January 16). Forgive the imprecise singular: “Restaurant Weeks” would be more accurate, since the event continues for 20 days, through February 4. This year, 44 restaurants south of Canal Street are offering two-course lunches and three-course dinners for fixed prices of $30, $45 and $60, depending on location and time of day.
Restaurant Week was born in New York 42 years ago. (The concept has since spread to dozens of other American cities.) It began as a tip of the hat to the 10,000-plus reporters who came to the City to cover the 1992 Democratic National Convention. The twice-yearly events are valuable to restaurateurs because they coincide with the two most fallow parts of the year, in mid-winter and late summer.
In many of these locations, the everyday prices are significantly higher than Restaurant Week offerings, which makes this value proposition a compelling opportunity to try places that might ordinarily be outside your budget. Because seats go fast, please call ahead to confirm availability and make a reservation.
