The historic sailing yacht Ventura, commissioned in 1919, has returned to North Cove. Unlike past years (decades, actually) she is now sailing from the south side of the marina, between the sailing school and Shearwater.
Long-time skipper and marina tenant Captain Pat Harris says he is happy with the new location. “I’m really pleased that IGY/Brookfield has agreed that the new dock location is a more appropriate dock for Ventura. It’s good for the boat, and probably going to be good for the residents of the community, too. With this kind of spirit of cooperation that IGY and Brookfield is now showing, we may be able to bring back to the community some of the public sailing trips we offered in the past and were forced to drop.”
Ventura’s first Friday Night Sunset Sail, which is a low-cost open to the public sail, set off on June 3, two days after returning to the marina.
Captain Pat says one of the public trips he’d like to restart was the much-beloved BYOD sail. “Four leggers are just as much part of any family as the two leggers, and there are plenty of those Downtown. Everybody — even the crew — loved these bring-your-own dog and brunch Sunday sails.”
